Wheels of Dana: Bike Tour Down Under

Map with bike logo.jpg

Hello and welcome to a story of 'Cycling, Charity & Challenge'

The quickest way to get a gist of this trip is to read this summary of the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE & WHY…

WHO?

Skinny guy from Dorset in the UK, who is now an Aussie on a bike touring mission.

WHAT?

Riding a bicycle from south to north of the Southern Hemisphere – New Zealand, East Coast of Australia and Indonesia. ‘Wheels of Dana’ is the name of the trip, as I will be riding my bike and raising money for charity.

It is a play on words as the ‘Wheel of Dharma’ is a Buddhist symbol for the cycle of life, yet the word ‘Dana’ means to give from the heart. So, it means this bike trip is about ‘turning the wheels of giving’, in a literal and metaphorical way.

WHEN?

1st January - 1st July 2025 (ish – depending on tail winds, time spent getting lost & swooping magpies).

WHERE?

Basically, going from south to north of Australasia, covering around 8,000km.

So far, the plan is:

  • NZ = Christchurch to Auckland 1,500km

  • AUS = Melbourne to Rocky Point 5,200km

  • IDN = Bali to Jakarta 1,300km

WHY?

Why not? I actually made a list of over 20 reasons why this adventure has come to fruition, but the four main reasons are:

  1. Raise funds for:

  2. ‘Practice what I preach’ as a high school Humanities teacher – by learning more about societies, cultures, history, geography and sustainability.

  3. A celebration of becoming an Australia Citizen this year, by exploring this beautiful ‘land of plenty’, in addition to giving back to the country that has shared so much with me.

  4. Wanderlust/intestinal fortitude – I think the words of Susan Jeffers cover this succinctly ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’.

Thank you for your time, support and reading this far.

Please feel free to read more, follow the trip, or donate to any of the charities by clicking on the Blog Section.

What’s your dream for 2025?

Warmest regards,

David Antell – Wheels of Dana

Donations (Dana)

  • We all know somebody who has been affect by mental health struggles, cancer or the changing environment.

  • I am planning on cycling around 8,000km for this trip. Therefore, if you donate $10 per 1,000km, this would be $80 in total.

  • Even the smallest donation can make a difference to many lives. I have got the ball rolling, by giving $100 to each of the three charities I have chosen.

Please choose from the three charities below to give a donation:

  • Black Dog Institute – Mental Health

  • Canteen – Supporting young people affected by Cancer

THANK YOU 😊
